چکیده

Black hole masses in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are difficult to measure using conventional dynamical methods, but can be determined using the technique of reverberation mapping. However, it is important to verify that the results of these different methods are equivalent. This can be done indirectly, using scaling relations between the black hole and the host galaxy spheroid. For this purpose, we have obtained new measurements of the bulge stellar velocity dispersion, σ∗, in Seyfert 1 galaxies. These are used in conjunction with the M• – σ∗ relation to validate nuclear black hole masses, M•, in active galaxies determined through reverberation mapping. We find that Seyfert galaxies follow the same M• – σ∗ relation as non-active galaxies, indicating that reverberation mapping measurements of M• are consistent with those obtained using other methods. We also reconsider the relationship between bulge absolute magnitude, Mbul, and black hole mass. We find that Seyfert galaxies are offset from non-active galaxies, but that the deviation can be entirely understood as a difference in bulge luminosity, not black hole mass; Seyfert hosts are brighter than normal galaxies for a given value of their velocity dispersion, perhaps as a result of younger stellar populations. Dwarf Seyfert 1 Nuclei and the Low-mass End of the Mbh −σ Relation

To examine the relationship between black hole mass and host galaxy velocity dispersion for low black hole masses, we have measured the velocity dispersions of 15 Seyfert 1 galaxies from the catalog of Greene & Ho (2004). These Seyferts were selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to have estimated black hole masses below 106 M⊙. The data are consistent with a straightforward downward extrap...

On black hole masses, radio-loudness and bulge luminosities of Seyfert galaxies

We estimated black hole masses for 9 Seyfert 1 and 13 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the Palomar and CfA bright Seyfert samples using the tight correlation between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion. Combining other 13 Seyfert 1s and 2 Seyfert 2s in these samples but with black hole masses measured recently by reverberation mapping and stellar/gas dynamics, we studied the correlations of blac...

Relations between Massive Black Holes in AGN and their Host Galaxies

Massive black holes detected in the centers of many nearby galaxies are linearly correlated with the luminosity of the host bulge, the black hole mass being about 0.1% of the bulge mass. An even stronger relation exists between the BH mass (Mbh) and the stellar velocity dispersion in the host bulge. We show that massive BHs of AGNs (measured by reverberation mapping) and their bulge luminosity ...

Black hole mass and velocity dispersion of narrow line region in active galactic nuclei and narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies

Controversy regarding whether Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) follow the same black hole — galactic bulge relation as normal galaxies has been raised by Mathur et al. (2001) and Ferrarese et al. (2001). In this paper, the correlation between the black hole mass and the velocity dispersion of the narrow line region, indicated by the [OIII] line width for a heterogeneous sample of NLS1s, i...

The relation between black hole mass and velocity dispersion at z ∼ 0 . 37

The velocity dispersion of 7 Seyfert 1 galaxies at z ∼ 0.37 is measured using high signal-to-noise Keck spectra. Black hole (BH) mass estimates are obtained via an empirically calibrated photoionization method. We derive the BH mass velocity dispersion relationship at z ∼ 0.37. We find an offset with respect to the local relationship, in the sense of somewhat lower velocity dispersion at a fixe...
